My Tried-and-True 3 Days in Amsterdam Itinerary

This itinerary is designed to be smart and efficient. I’ve grouped activities by neighborhood so you’re not wasting precious time crisscrossing the city. Trust me, your feet will thank you later!

➤ Day 1: Iconic Museums & Historic Heart

Neighborhoods: Museumplein, Grachtengordel (Canal Belt)

9:00 AM: Van Gogh Museum

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, a key stop on any perfect 3 days in Amsterdam itinerary.
Start your first morning at the stunning Van Gogh Museum—book those tickets early!

I always like to start my 3 days in Amsterdam with a dose of artistic brilliance. The Van Gogh Museum is an absolute masterpiece itself, and seeing his swirling stars and sunflowers up close is breathtaking. Book the first time slot online in advance to enjoy the galleries with fewer crowds. You can get your tickets directly from the Official Van Gogh Museum website. Pro tip from me: the audio guide is fantastic and really brings his tragic but beautiful story to life.

11:30 AM: Rijksmuseum
Just a short walk across the famous Museumplein square, you’ll find the Rijksmuseum. You don’t need to see everything in this massive place! I always make a beeline for the Gallery of Honour to say hello to Rembrandt’s The Night Watch—it’s even more imposing in person than you’d think.

1:30 PM: Lunch in De Pijp
Let’s hop on a tram for a few stops to my favorite foodie neighborhood, De Pijp. You can grab a bite at the incredible Foodhallen (an indoor food market) or find a cozy café on a side street.

3:00 PM: Anne Frank House

The narrow brick building of the Anne Frank House on the Amsterdam canal.
A visit to the Anne Frank House is a powerful and moving historical experience.

This is one of the most moving and important sites in the world. Walking through the secret annex where Anne and her family hid is a profoundly humbling experience. Booking is essential and competitive; tickets are released online every Tuesday for dates six weeks ahead on the Anne Frank House official site. Set a calendar reminder!

6:00 PM: Evening Canal Cruise

Seeing the illuminated bridges and houses from a canal cruise is pure magic.

We’re ending the first of our 3 days in Amsterdam with my favorite activity: a canal cruise. Seeing the city from the water as the bridges light up is pure magic. I recommend a small, open-boat tour for a more intimate experience. It’s the perfect way to understand why Amsterdam’s canal ring is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

➤ Day 2: Bikes, Brown Cafés & the Jordaan

Neighborhoods: Jordaan, De 9 Straatjes, De Wallen

9:30 AM: Become a Local on Two Wheels
You can’t truly experience the city without joining the flow of cyclists! I always rent my bike from Black Bikes—they’re reliable and have multiple locations. Start with a relaxing ride through Vondelpark to get your bearings before tackling the busier bike lanes.

There’s no better way to experience the city like a local than by renting a bike.

11:00 AM: Get Lost in the Jordaan
Cycle over to the Jordaan district. This is the Amsterdam of your dreams—quiet canals, quaint bridges, and gorgeous, quirky houses. This is the time to put your map away and just wander. I’ve found some of my favorite hidden courtyards and art galleries this way.

Wandering the peaceful canals of the Jordaan is the perfect way to spend an afternoon.

1:00 PM: The 9 Streets & Apple Pie
The Jordaan flows seamlessly into De 9 Straatjes (The 9 Streets). It’s a shopper’s paradise for unique boutiques and vintage finds. My non-negotiable stop here is Winkel 43 for a slice of their legendary Dutch apple pie. Trust me, it’s worth the hype!

3:00 PM: See the Sights & Smell the Flowers
Cycle over to the Bloemenmarkt, the world’s only floating flower market. It’s touristy, but it’s a vibrant and fun spot for photos and to pick up some tulip bulbs. Afterwards, pedal through Rembrandtplein to feel the city’s lively pulse.

6:00 PM: A Respectful Look at the Red Light District
After dinner, I highly recommend taking a guided walking tour of De Wallen (the Red Light District). A good guide will provide fascinating historical and cultural context you’d completely miss on your own. I’ve had great experiences with tours from Sandeman’s New Europe. Remember, be respectful: no photos of the workers.

➤ Day 3: Creative Noord & A Sweet Farewell

Neighborhoods: Amsterdam-Noord, De Pijp

10:00 AM: Discover Amsterdam’s Creative Side
Take the free ferry from behind Central Station (it’s a short, fun ride!) to Amsterdam-Noord. This former industrial area is now the city’s coolest creative hub. Explore the NDSM Wharf, an open-air street art museum on a massive repurposed shipyard. If you love urban art, the STRAAT Museum is a must-visit.

1:00 PM: Final Foodie Adventures
Head back to De Pijp for lunch. If you didn’t make it to Foodhallen yesterday, now’s your chance! Then, take a stroll down the Albert Cuyp Market to soak up the local atmosphere. This is your last chance to try a fresh, warm stroopwafel—don’t let it pass you by!

3:00 PM: One Last Canal-Side Moment
Use your final afternoon to revisit a favorite neighborhood, pick up some Dutch cheese, or simply find a sunny spot by a canal to just watch the world go by. Some of my best memories are from these quiet, unplanned moments.

Sarah’s Essential Amsterdam Planning

To make your 3 days in Amsterdam seamless, here are my top practical tips:

  • Book Key Attractions Early: For the Anne Frank House and Van Gogh Museum, book tickets online weeks in advance. This is the single most important tip I can give you.
  • Consider the I amsterdam City Card: If you’re following this itinerary closely, this card can save you money. It includes your transport, a canal cruise, and entry to the Van Gogh Museum (but not the Anne Frank House). Check the I amsterdam official site for current prices.
  • Stay Centrally: For a short trip, choose a hotel in the Canal Belt, Jordaan, or De Pijp to minimize travel time. I make it easy to find a great place to stay—check out my hotel booking page here!
  • Pack Comfy Shoes: You will be walking and cycling a lot. Comfort is key!
  • Download These Apps: The GVB app for public transport and Google Maps for cycling and walking routes.

Your Amsterdam Questions, Answered!

Absolutely! A long weekend, or 3 days in Amsterdam, is the perfect amount of time to see the highlights and get a real feel for the city’s unique vibe without feeling rushed. It’s one of my top recommended European city breaks!

Your own two feet and a bicycle! Amsterdam is incredibly walkable, and cycling is the best way to feel like a local. Use trams for longer hops.

My top five are: Stroopwafels, bitterballen (with a beer!), Dutch pancakes, apple pie from Winkel 43, and raw herring if you’re feeling brave!

100%, yes. It’s a powerful and unforgettable historical experience that adds deep meaning to your trip.

Hands down, the Jordaan and De 9 Straatjes. You could spend a whole day just exploring the charming boutiques and cozy coffee shops here.

I hope this personalized itinerary helps you plan an absolutely incredible 3 days in Amsterdam. This city has a piece of my heart, and I know it will capture yours, too.

Your adventure is just a click away! When you’re ready to book, I’d love to help you get there. Find the best flight and hotel deals for your Amsterdam trip on my homepage.
